FAQ
What is an Oral and Craniomaxillofacial (OCMFS) Surgeon?
An oral and craniomaxillofacial surgeon is a qualified specialist surgeon who treats the entire craniomaxillofacial complex. This includes the anatomical area of the mouth, upper and lower jaw bones, the face, skull and other associated structures. During their training they are fully equipped to perform surgical operations; aesthetic facial surgery being one area of their specialised training. Craniomaxillofacial surgeons have double honours in both dentistry and medicine.
What is an Oral Surgeon?
An oral surgeon is a dentist who has undergone further training to become a specialist. During their training, an oral surgeon learns how to carry out operations of the mouth and jaw bones. A degree in dentistry is prerequisite to becoming an oral surgeon.
What is a Plastic Surgeon?
A plastic surgeon is a specialist doctor who, during his further training, has learned to perform specialist surgical operations. Plastic surgeons undergo their training in significant areas, such as reconstructive surgery, often needed to treat severe burns. Aesthetic surgery compiles a part of their training. A degree in medicine is a prerequisite to becoming an aesthetic plastic surgeon.
Will you work together with my dentist?
We will happily work together with the dentist of your choice. Your dentist can also choose to work with the implant manufacturer with whom they have most experience.
We currently have dental implants from the following manufacturers at our disposal:
- Nobel Biocare
- Astra
- Straumann
- Dentsply/Ankylos
- Camlog
For more information, please read the Dental Implant section of our website.
Can my tooth be removed by my dentist?
Ideally, if an implant should be needed later, the diseased tooth should be removed by the surgeon who will later insert your dental implant. There are many further reasons for this, for more information on the reasons why, please read the Tooth Extraction section of our website.
Who should insert my dental implant?
We believe that you would greatly benefit from the experience that a surgeon has to offer. For surgeons, the implementation of a dental implant is a simple procedure.
What is bone grafting?
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure, whereby we gather your own bone from the nearby area or from the wisdom tooth area to build up weaker structures of the face and jaw. The wisdom tooth area can renew itself within just 3 months.
For procedures such as sinus augmentation, where only a small amount of bone is needed, we can gain this bone while drilling, using a special filter.
What is artificial bone?
Artificial bone is made from substances taken from animals such as cows or pigs, or from coral, and is not alive.
Why are own bone procedures so much superior?
Every cell in your own bone contains your own immune system; infections and rejection are therefore very unlikely when using this procedure.
Why is the bone not taken from the pelvic area?
Bone from the pelvic area is only used in extreme cases, as the bone from this area deteriorates more quickly.
The bone gained from the jaw area is much more durable; hardly deteriorating over its lifespan. Also, a second operation would not be necessary.
