Root Tip Resection

This operation involves filing down the tip of the tooth root by a few millimetres in order to remove bacteria infected branches of the root canal.

These branches and additional canals can often not be treated by the dentist, causing inflammation and cysts to occur; showing up as a black mark on an X-ray.

Retrograde Root Tip Resection

We extend the existing shortened root canal and fill the remaining area with Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).

Orthograde Root Tip Resection

Root canals that have not previously been filled can be treated by placing an acrylic rod into the canal through an opening in the crown of the tooth. This rod is self-fitting and is additionally cemented into place using AH26 fixing agent.

Anaesthetic

Root tip resection can be done under local anaesthesia, half sleep (premedication/sedation) or under general anaesthesia.

Post Operation

Generally, root tip resection operations are tolerated well.

After the operation you will receive cool compresses from us to aid the healing process.

Generally, swelling in the cheeks goes down within only a few days.

The stitches will be removed one week after the root tip resection.
